Driffield Millenium Green

Driffield Millennium Green is the last piece of open countryside within the town boundaries, it provides an ideal rural haven of peace and tranquillity within a few minutes walk of the town centre.

As well as forming part of the initial stages of the Wold Rangers Way and the various Trods, it provides the starting point for a number of walks that border the parish boundary and has been used by generations of Driffield residents.

History

The Green, an 8 acre site, was created in 2000 with the help of funding from the Millennium Green Commission and is run and administered by a charitable trust.  The area is particularly significant to our local history, with the Kings Mill area on which the Green sits, being cited in the Domesday Book.

The area is rich in flora and fauna, being home to great crested newts and rare orchids as well as bordering a site a Special Scientific Interest and the most northerly chalk stream in Britain.

Environmental importance

Over the years, various environmental community events have taken place there, including tree planting and wildlife workshops & educational classes. The Green is a favourite haunt of our local schools as it enables young children to experience such flora and fauna first hand.

Recent projects in partnership with the East Yorkshire Chalk Rivers Trust, Bishop Burton College and local ecologists from Wold Ecology have included willow hedging, pond renovation and, with funding from the UK Government, a new accessible path has been installed.  We also now boast some lovely picnic benches made by Driffield Men in Sheds, which all in all make The Green a wonderful place to visit.
